It's amazing how things manage to culminate. This summer for me has been more a lesson of accepting this madness and finding a way to create my own little eye in the storm. I kept telling myself at the end of the semester things would calm down. and then it's the end of the summer.. and then it's christmas break... and then .. and then.. but I don't think things are going to slow themselves down for me, and I don't know if I necessarily want them to.
I look at the things which are keeping me busy and I don't want to lose any of it: one of my best friends got married (and bought a house!), two other friends married and moved to Ireland, three friends took off to Peru, one of them will leave for Mexico on his return. One of my dearest friends is going to start his post doc in the states, though I don't imagine he realizes how greatly he's appreciated. Another is leaving to be with his family and find a job farther away. I'm starting my masters! I'm planning on going to conferences, doing some travelling, taking a few weeks to go relearn French..
These are all beautiful things and I want to be there for my friends and I want to do these things for myself and so it has arrived at a moment where I have to change to make sure all of these things work. And so this week I have begun trying to reorganize myself a bit. I bought myself new smaller, simpler furniture for my bedroom. This will free up some space (as my old furniture was terribly bulky.. it allowed me to hoard many things.. but it didn't allow for much freedom of movement unfortunately..) and help me.. simplify things. Find room for what matters and get rid of all the things I stack, squeeze and cram into the nooks and crannies of this place.
It is the physical manifestation of what I'm doing in my life right now: reorganizing, prioritizing, and simplifying. And it is extremely gratifying. I am delighting in watching the boxes of books march to the used bookstore, or old clothes journey to the salvation army. I am also delighting in things I'm noticing myself do.. re-kindling my appreciation of getting physical activity.. seeking out friends just to chat.. appreciating good healthy food. These things sound so trivial and silly, but they're easy to lose when you're too busy thinking you're too busy. Let's see if I can start adding good books to that list..
That's what is going on with me right now my friends. I have a couple of recently finished baby sweaters I will post when I get around to it. I am really excited about them because they're for a family I'm excited to see start, and they use buttons from my Grandma's button bucket I lost and have now found.
That's all I have to say right now. While this post is a little self indulgent and inward, I also what to say that I am still aware of the world around me. And some of it saddens me. The Olympics are starting today and I won't be watching them. Po Mo GoLightly has a contest and a post here
talking a bit about Tibet's troubles right now. Please check it out if you have time (maybe also check out some of these sites for more info: Students for a Free Tibet , International Campaign for Tibet). Part of their contest is to post the following quote on your blog.
"None of us are free until ALL of us are free"
I think it's perfect.

A series of Letters
Being the monster creeper that I am, I may or may not have been pouring over random people's profiles on ravelry to avoid studying. This may or may not have led to me to a group for women getting married, which may or may not have led me to a hillarious post in which the women wrote letters to everyone and anyone who was bothering them. This may or may not have struck a chord with me, one who often writes little letters to every day annoyances. I'm in the letter writing mood and so you are going to get a wordy post of letters.
Dear Weather,
You may not know this, but I can be a very anxious person. This may surprise you, given how apathetic I can seem at times towards important things like getting assignments done on time, but truly there are things which can leave me sleepless for weeks. For example, my fear of being sent back in time, incurring some sort of severe injury and requiring the ancient pseudo-doctor cut off one of my limbs with a hacksaw while I down whatever alcohol can be found at hand. I also fear the possibility that one day I will be a little old lady and have Alzheimer's, and I will wander the cold winter wasteland that is this city at times, lost, scared cold, and completely unsure of who I am. These are biggies, but similarly high up there is missing my 9AM final exams. This fear is somewhat more feasible than the others, particularly given my propensity for sleeping in and/or missing the bus. So when you decide to dump 19874 tonnes of snow on our fair city while I am trying to write exams, it causes me a great deal of undue stress, because I can barely catch a bus on time, let alone wake up an hour earlier to catch a bus which MAY or may not get stuck in traffic for 5 hours. This is particularly perplexing as I already played this game with you during winter exams. I thought we agreed you would be nice to me in April, seeing as I was graduating and all.
Sleeplessly yours,
Leah
Dear Brain,
Why do you have all your most excellent ideas when you should be studying for exams? I know you have been saving those two balls of the pretty seaside yarn for what seems like FOREVER, just waiting for inspiration to strike, but you cannot just abandon me for knitting in my most dire of hours!
Tempted,
Leah
Dear Yarn Stores,
Since my mind has decided to focus on procuring more of the beautiful seaside yarn for it's latest brilliant plan, it would help me a lot if you could provide this yarn promptly so we can return to studying. It does not help when you have a poorly done website and are closed on Monday's so I can't call to verify you have some in stock to set my mind at ease. .......
Scratch that. Let's make this one have a wider reach...
Dear Stores in General,
An internet presence is a must. You want to make money? Start acting like it. You may be small, but a website with even just your phone number and address and hours of operation would be nice and very easy to set up. In fact, you could set up a blog! That's SUPER easy! And you could say when you have new shipments of stock in.. maybe put up a couple of pictures of the new delightful things! I know I would be more likely to drop by.
Cheers,
Leah
Dear Hair,
I know you just want to be close to me, it's understandable. I am pretty awesome. But I just don't feel the same. So if you could stop with the static and adhering to my face, particularly those regions close to my eyes, it would be super. I know you need a trim but we're in a bit of a crisis mode right now and would sincerely appreciate your cooperation.
Kindly,
Leah
Dear Blog,
I'm sorry for neglecting you. I promise to try and be more faithful. I have many things I want to tell you right now! This isn't shocking because I should be studying... hopefully I remember them after I finish frying my brain.
Cheers,
Leah
Phew! well now I feel better! I'm going back to the books. Hope to be back soon.
Cheers,
Leah
Ps. Here are some photos of the centerpieces I made for our graduation banquet last week. Leftovers + Studying == exercise program begins next week... I'm glad they were a big success though. This way I don't have an eternities worthe of temptation lying around the house.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been 2 and a half months since my last confession...
I know. I promised myself this wouldn't happen. I talk so much, it should be easy to just write up a blog post.. pft.. what.. every couple hours? oh yeah. It's a cinch. I am at work right now and do not have my camera at my disposal, so no pretty pictures but it's a step. A step in the right direction.
I do have plans for another post very soon as TODAY ends the incubation period of the son of some friends of mine. Today the world welcomes a beautiful baby boy, Lincoln Reid, and I begin to panic about finishing all the baby things I have on the go to give to them.. EEEEE! So hopefully within the next two days I will post so that you may bear witness to the fruits of my labour! And maybe after that, once the new mom and dad have some time to settle in, I may bear witness of the fruits of their labour and deliver my own goods.... I love babies.
In other news, I would like to celebrate the art that is lolcats and the beauty that is the union between lolcaptionry and pandas.

This image has inspired me to adopt all sound effects as verbs. From this point on, all eating will be referred to as "noming it all down." A phrase which can of course only be followed with "NOM NOM NOM!!!" I anticipate the public will be very welcoming with this trend..
As far as new words I wish to add to the public vernacular, let me just say that I think the people should be moving away from "hard drives" and moving closer to "DATA MOONS". Have you ever seen a platter from inside a hard drive? Go google image search for it. Don't worry, I'll wait right here. Done? The platter (the silver shiny disk holding all your data) looks wickedly like a silvery moon filled with data goodness. I think this is a trend I can get on board with, or rather fund the ship for. Come on board, have a little fun. You know you want to.
Lastly I want to throw a shout out to the Miss America Pageant for being pretty awful. I was visiting the Boyfriend remotely at his mother's place this weekend and while waiting for him to wake up I picked up my needles and turned on the tv. It was early on a sunday morning so one of the few things on the tube (which I think doesn't extend beyond a minimal cable package) was a rerun of this years Miss America Pageant. Having never lived in the states, I suppose I won't know, but do people really look up to Miss America? There was a lot of lip service done to the Miss America Organization for providing healthy alternative roll-models to the likes of Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. Is this true? Do people actually care? And really, I don't know how much of an improvement these contestants are. I'm sure a lot of them are intelligent and educated (I mean it has a "scholarship" program after all. I'm hoping this means some of them go to school) but despite the cited recent changes to the competition to make it about the qualities of these women "above and beyond" their looks, it all seems to ring a little false. The little girls watching this show see 3 things: the dress, the hair, and the bathing suit.
So lets talk about these changes... This year, the Miss America Pagent held a few weeks of "boot camp" before the competition to teach the contestants about some of the new changes. They gave them makeovers, allowed the contestants to be more playful with their swimsuit poses, and gave them new dresses which were less about the flash bang sequins and more about the elegant minimalistic cuts. I am failing to see where any of these changes impact the emphasis placed on physical beauty but what really got my goat was that despite all the advertising for the most radically different Miss America to date, none of even these trivial changes from the bootcamp carried over to the actual competition. Their dresses were gaudy... they still all sang somewhere over the rainbow dreadfully off key.. and they all felt like they wanted to have their childhood dream of being miss america so they could accomplish world peace. blarg-o-blarg.
excuse me but now that I think about it, I'm going to go mourn those 2 hours of my life I will never get back. Thank you Miss America.
Cheers,
Leah
ps.
hmm.. i lied.. there are pictures in this post.. And lying is a sin... so I must do more penance. I know.. I will go eat cake and take pictures of the cake to share with you! And by eating this cake I will remove it so that others may not eat cake, thus helping the population avoid temptation. Wow I'm so good at life! or... something. It's unclear what. That being said, I best go prepare for tonights cake date!

A hop, skip and a jump later
A Quick Update for those who love sweets! I went up to visit TheSignificantOther this past long weekend (4 days! squeel!) and we visited a local cupcake bakery that I've been dying to try and it was absolutely fabulous TSO was as kind as to buy me a dozen, even though I could barely stomach two..
The others however were saved and squirreled home on the bus and shared with good friends so have no fear of waste my dears.
As I got to pick them, they were all chocolate cupcakes however we tried: Peppermint, Strawberry, Peanubutter, and BlueVanilla Icing. All of which were entirely delectable, delightful and delicious (much like the knittings of my new friend on ravelry: http://www.cosymakes.wordpress.com I feel the need to show her off even though she doesn't know me because she is the first person to friend me on Ravelry and I am much excited. I am hoping to fit into the knitting community online, even if I can't always make it to the local SnB sessions)
Here are some photos of the cupcakes and I'm sorry if I've teased you all too much.
Lastly, here's an update on the little bits of knitting I've managed to get in, over the past few days:
The mate for The MountainMan Mitts was done, I just have to add the thumbs to both (I hate adding thumbs..) I'm hoping to give them to the MountainMan this Sunday at curling!
And I cast on and got a bit through the first glove for TheFriendlyGiant. He has giant hands! I'm perpetually amazed at how I can look at these and think they couldn't possibly fit a human being and then he slips it on and it's as snug as a glove.. I'm using Berocco Ultra Alpaca on these, which I've never used before and I love it. Alpaca is so soft.. It's beautiful.

Anyways Ducks. I have tons of homework to do AND TSO bought me Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and Viva Pinata this week for our anniversary.. so.. I think I need to get in a bit of gaming time in his absence. AND I need to make time to sneak over to Chuckles house to try out Mario Galaxy. *GLEE* finally a good game out for the Wii and I have to be slaving over a toasty laptop. I think the only solution is celery and marshmellows.. (not together, but hopefully the wholesomeness of the celery will trick me into being guilt free about the marshmellows... I love you guimauves! ) Also. In summation I wish to apologize for my inability to use a camera. That is why all these pictures look awful.. except for the penguin, but that's really just my bias for the subject talking and not indicative of the quality of photo at all. anyways. Sorry in advance for all the awful pictures to come. Have a good day!
Cheers,
Leah
Lastly: A shot from my trip to Disneyworld last month! All day with 6 girls, of course there are 10 photos of me in stupid hats, it is but of course natural to force each other into these situations :).

Goodbye Weekend... I knew thee well..
Well I've been meaning to get back to you, oh blog of my heart, but sometimes the forces of the universe conspire to eat up my time. I figure it's really trying to be nice though, maybe by cramming a suicide-inducing amount of work into my week it's helping me open up next week for cupcakes and goodtimes... or something.. But somehow I sense people don't surf the internet to read about my depressing condition.. Unless they're looking for some good old fashion Schadenfreude in your life.. so I will try and bring back some of the goodtimes to cheer myself up and make for a less depressing entry. Though perhaps the freetime accumulation theory has something to it.. next weekend I will get to visit TheSignificantOther in his current far off location of AnotherUniversityForGradSchool... And so perhaps it's good that all these books are crowding this week so that the two of us can bask in each others glory, eat cupcakes, and possibly visit a foreign yarn store... *shifty eyes* he may not know of these plans yet.
The CupcakeWench, E-TownBeatDown and I got together this Friday after a sorely felt period of separation (the arts side of campus is so far...) and caught up on the past few episodes of Pushing Daisies. I am telling you now, if you have not seen this show, you are missing out. It's beautifully done, very colourful and quirky and just overall delicious (how can a story of a pie man with issues who can bring back the dead temporarily be anything but? ) I definitely recommend.
Also, E-TownBeatDown made new cd's for CupcakeWench and myself and given my love of music and yet terrible ability to consume music and over play it at record speed, it is a greatly appreciated breath of fresh sounds. I haven't given it the "bus" test yet but I think it will pass with flying colours. Hmm I wanted to add a foot note about the bus test.. but I can't quite figure out how to do that. Or at least I shouldn't allow myself to go questing for the answer just yet. The blog entry is a reward for finishing a portion of my homework, I can't be taking advantage of it by going off on a tangental learning adventure. Anyways, for those of you not in the know, the bus test is merely finding a long route which has few enough riders to get your own seat by the window and then listen to the album on the bus and figure which songs fit. I mean, there are songs for bopping to and dancing with yourself. There are songs for driving too (some for city traffic jams, and others for the highway. Some for when you're alone and others for when you're cruising with friends). But In the end, I find if I can listen to something on the bus and enjoy it while I'm watching the world pass me by it will most likely stand the test of time. This album has the right feeling, I think it will be a winner.I haven't gotten as much knitting in this week as I had hoped, however I have made some progress on MountainMan's Fingerless Mitts. I do hope he likes them. The yarn, while I love the colour and the way it looks, has been more painful to work with. It doesn't slip very easily and has a rough feeling so that the tips of my fingers get a little raw by the end of a knitting session, and I find my fingers get stiff and sore much quicker while I'm working on it. But I have one hand almost done and I have the right size this time so they'll soon be out of my hair.
I have been finding more and more patterns daily to add to my queue. It is shaping up to be a dangerous winter. Soon I am going to go on a LYS hunt however. I have only been to two in my city and I am curious what else the world has to offer. I just have to find the time... I will let you know how it turns out and inevitably show off the spoils of my adventure!
That's all I got for now. I bid thee adieu dear mon petit chou!
Cheers,
Leah

First past the post!
I wrote a really long post about who I am and why I'm starting this blog and why I think my single voice matters on this giant interweb... but then I got bored of it and decided I should just jump on the recent trend of posting the 5 things people don't know about you. So here goes:
1) I don't wear clothes, I wear costumes. So that's not to say I dress up crazy every day for school. I usually am pretty calm, I wear my blue jeans and a knitted sweater or a tshirt.. I'm not talking about tutus or long black leather cotes with a studded collar. But when I get up in the morning I pick the things I wear based on what I think the colours make. So one day I will wear all blue to try and be the ocean or wear my most leafy green top and sturdiest and woodliest brown chords to be a giant tree. Other days I will wear my tan beach pants and be a pirate princess! People don't know it but today they were talking to a walking bluebell.. And I suppose by talking it was also a talking bluebell..
2) I just started playing violin this fall! I have played: piano, flute, bari sax, trumpet, and clarinet in the past (from most to least experience). I love music and once upon a time dreamed of growing up to be a musician. I think the thing which made me change my mind was that I think I loved more being part of a band and being part of the group than I did the solitary study.
3) I hate coconut, eggs, bananas, onions, and fish. Seriously people, why do all breakfast menus at all my cute little cafes all have eggs on everything. Eggs have the texture of brains, and if heroes has taught me nothing else, it's that the guy who eats brains is the bad guy. Fin.
4) I have an abnormally high body temperature most of the time. My house is very cold all the time, just the way I like it. I love the fall and winter because I can wear my cozy clothes and be comfortably cool outside. The only downside is that I have to peal off the layers everytime I go to a new class because it's just too warm inside for me to think.
5) I have two best friends and for best friend 1 (hence forth known as LittleRedRidingHood or TheCupcakeWench)'s birthday, best friend 2 (known as E-TownBeatDown) and I break into her apartment (with family members assistance in a completely legal manner) and hide little cartoon cut outs all over her house. One year we hide all 151 pokemon with a message written on their backs. If she caught them all and put them in order she could find our secret message. Another year we cut out 88 Domokun to be the crazy 88 from Kill bill. we named them all. To this day I don't think she's found all of them from any year. Occasionally she'll find some wedged in with a deck of cards or in her container of tylenol. Sneaky little things. Things I like.
And that's 5 things you probably didn't know about me. And my first blog post. HUZZAH! and now I can quickly proceed to forget and neglect... ;) or at least try not to.
A quick summary of my original first post: I Love to knit, I love to read, I love being a student and will be in grad school in the fall (if all goes well). I recently joined ravelry and recommend everyone get on there. My log in id is burnt3rain.
Cheers,
Leah
